Episode 34: The $313,000 Coffin
Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at 9:57AM
With all you Pennsylvania speeders out there right now, this ought to hit home.
Saturday morning, 7 a.m. I headed out for Malibu to start my triathlon training at the beach. Only, I never made it.
I was already running behind schedule and was cutting it close to our start time. I figured I could make it on time if I pulled just a few mph faster than normal on the highway.
Less than half way there, I came to a complete stop. Traffic like you wouldn’t imagine was backed up as far as the eye could see. Yes, this is LA… but even this wasn’t right. Especially early in the morning on a Saturday.
A lime-green 2008 Lamborghini Murcielago plunged through a guardrail and landed upside down in a condo parking structure, bursting into fl ames upon impact. The driver was not only killed but also burnt beyond recognition along with the car. Though the accident happened in the night hours, it left three of the four highway lanes closed for cleanup and investigation through the morning.
The Lamborghini took at least a 30-foot drop and cleared a six-foot chain link fence before crashing. These cars start at $313,000. I guess that doesn’t buy you everything. Apparently they don’t quite live up to Ferrari’s “crash-test record” of being able to walk away from a wreck where your ride is split in two.
My first thought was, “OMG! How does this stuff happen!?! ” Officials confirmed both speed and alcohol. The locals responded indifferently saying, “Yeah, there’s at least three power- cars that have that same crash here each year.”
It’s better to arrive late, than not at all.
Until next time, don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.
